Olliers to host criminal law careers advice webinars for graduate and undergraduate students
Olliers are delighted to announce a criminal law careers webinar aimed at graduate and undergraduate students. The purpose of the webinar is to provide careers advice to aspiring entrants to the criminal law profession.
The webinar will take place via zoom on Friday 9th July at 2pm. To register please email ruthpeters@olliers.com.
The webinar will consist of brief sessions presented by various members of the Olliers team.
Why now is a fantastic time to pursue a career in criminal defence
This session will be led by Matthew Claughton, Managing Director of Olliers. Matthew is the Manchester Legal Awards Partner of the Year 2021. Matthew is passionate about inspiring entrants to the criminal profession and oversees Olliers internship programme.
What does a criminal solicitor do?
This will be presented by Laura Baumanis. Laura joined Olliers in 2005 and qualified as a solicitor in 2008. Since joining the firm, Laura has worked on a number of serious criminal cases however Laura now specialises in the defence of those under investigation particularly for offences of sexual nature. Laura is known for her pro-active approach during the ongoing investigation stage of a case. She is known for her strategic approach liaising with investigators throughout. She applies a combination of formal and informal representations to police and prosecutors ensuring that the chances of a prosecution are kept to a minimum.
The reality of life as a trainee solicitor in a criminal defence law firm
This session will be led by Lily Grundy. Lily is a trainee solicitor at Olliers having joined in September 2019. She has undertaken the police station accreditation process and is undergoing a structured training contract programme. She joined Olliers after having taken part in our internship programme and can provide practical advice in relation to applying to law firms. She will also give a realistic account of day to day life as a trainee in a busy criminal defence law firm.
Starting a new position in a criminal defence law firm
This will be presented by Martha Odysseos and Hannah Poole. Hannah and Martha joined Olliers recently after participating in our intern programme in 2020. Both Hannha and Martha are due to commence training contacts with Olliers shortly. Olliers latest’ recruits describe their experience of joining a firm during lockdown, balancing study with working and their assessment of the different routes open to qualification.

After hearing from the panellists individually we will then hold a question and answer section. If you have any specific questions you would like answered in the session please provide the same in advance via email although there will be opportunity during the webinar to ask questions to any member(s) of the panel.
