Day in the Life of a Trainee – Eleanor Harris

Written 30th September 2025 by Eleanor Harris

My journey into law began when I chose to study law at the University of Manchester. In my final year of university, I applied for the summer internship programme at Olliers Solicitors. After this, I was offered a job in the DBS department at Olliers, starting in August 2023. I was offered a training contract in July 2024 and began my training in January 2025.

Training Contract

Since starting as a trainee, a large proportion of my caseload is assisting senior solicitors with their cases. These cases are often private-paying crown court trials, which require a large amount of preparation. I often assist by writing a proof of evidence, taking witness statements, or attending court and making a note of the day’s proceedings. Attending court to observe proceedings not only supports the client but it is an invaluable method of learning how cases unfold and how (in some cases) months of work is used in the client’s favour.

I also have my own caseload, which includes magistrates’ court and crown court work. I am supervised by the more senior solicitors, in particular Kathryn Lloyd and Anne-Marie Nichols. Both of them offer a unique perspective, and they are always happy to answer my questions and provide guidance where it is needed. It is fantastic to have the resources and support to facilitate running my own cases. In preparation for a magistrates’ court trial, I will often go and visit the client in custody, speak to witnesses, and obtain exhibits to highlight before the court. Many of my crown court cases are legal aid clients, and representing these clients is rewarding as it is an opportunity to provide tailored, considered advice to those who would not otherwise be able to afford it.

Pre-charge engagement

Since becoming a trainee, I have been allocated my own pre-charge cases. This is a valuable opportunity for clients to establish a channel of communication with the police prior to a charging decision. Pre-charge work therefore includes, but is not limited to, communication with the police and the client, obtaining evidence, and identifying lines of pre-charge enquiry. This is with a view to writing and submitting representations, where appropriate, against charge to the police. I enjoy the pre-charge stage as this is a chance to urge the police and CPS to consider the charging standards and relevant law.

Police Stations

I am currently undertaking my police station accreditation. I have observed those with the qualification attending police stations and it is fascinating to see the level of support they provide, especially to those who have never been arrested before and are unfamiliar with the process. I recently passed the written exam and the next step towards accreditation is to complete a portfolio that will allow me to attend police stations unsupervised. I am extremely excited for this next step in my career; representing clients at this pivotal point in the case can be the difference between the case becoming a charge or a case of no further action.

The Future

I am currently nine months into my training contract, and I can safely say that every day is different. I enjoy the dynamic nature of the job and learning how to anticipate different outcomes, and subsequently, how best to advise the client. During my time as a trainee, I have gained insight into the journey of cases through the criminal justice system and how best to assist the clients throughout this process. I look forward to gaining more confidence and independence throughout my training.

My aspirations for the future are to gain the accreditations that Olliers offer internally such as the Pre-Charge Accreditation as well as finishing my LPC and qualifying as a solicitor in July 2027.
