Team Olliers complete Yorkshire Three Peaks Challenge

Written 21st September 2016 by Ruth Peters

Team Olliers completed the Yorkshire Three Peaks Challenge on Saturday 17th September 2016.

We arrived at the start for 7 am and straight away commenced our ascent of the first peak, Pen-Y-Ghent. For those unfamiliar, the idea of the Yorkshire Three Peaks is to climb the three highest peaks in the Yorkshire Dales: Pen-Y-Ghent, Whernside and Ingleborough.

The climb up Pen-Y-Ghent proved challenging as it was a steep climb to commence with. Following our descent of Pen-Y-Ghent, there was then a lengthy but relatively leisurely walk where we took in the beautiful countryside. This was followed by a brief stop for Matthew to liberally apply his sun cream whilst the rest of us had a quick snack.

The next climb Whernside was less steep but the peak of the summit seemed a never ending distance away. The final peak Ingleborough was perhaps the most challenging mentally as it involved what appeared to be an almost vertical climb. The relief on getting to the top of Ingleborough was apparent for us all together with the realisation that we had completed the challenge. The walk back to Horton again seemed never ending but the promise of a cold drink kept us all going.

“Saturday was a fantastic experience for all involved.  It was a really tough day and tested everybody’s endurance, but what a brilliant achievement for everyone who participated!  Team Olliers are well and truly up for the next challenge, whatever it may be!”

North West Legal Support Trust

Fundraising for the event was to support the North West Legal Support Trust (NWLST). The NWLST  raises and distributes funds to support free legal advice services and access to justice in the North West of England.

The charities supported by the NWLST help to facilitate and support access to justice for the poorest, most vulnerable and most disadvantaged members of society. They provide free legal help to people facing problems such as homelessness, debt, employment, family issues, mental health problems, discrimination and injustice.

We would like to thank all those who have supported us in our fundraising. There is still time left if you would like to sponsor us and our sponsorship page can be found here.

Our Next Challenge

We all thoroughly enjoyed the day although our feet may never look the same again! Many of us unused to walking such distances have surprised ourselves with how well we did and it certainly made a change for those of us used to spending our Saturdays on call at the police station. Team Olliers is now looking into our next challenge for 2017 and considering the National Three Peaks Challenge to push ourselves even further.
