Olliers’ Tim McArdle is to participate in the Ironman triathlon on Sunday of this week.
Ironman UK
Ironman is a triathlon where participants have to swim 2.4 miles, cycle 112 miles and then run 26.2 miles. The UK event is on the 19th July 2015 and commences at Pennington Flash in Leigh with the swimming event. Cyclists then embark on a 112-mile, two-loop journey from Pennington Flash and onto the Lancashire countryside. The bike course now includes the infamous Sheep House Lane climb where spectators have an amazing viewing area. The run commences at the Macron Stadium in Bolton and athletes then head into Bolton town centre, where they complete three loops of a circuit before finishing in Victoria Square in the shadow of the Albert Hall.
Ironman is considered to be one of the most grueling of all triathlon events and one of the most difficult one day sports events in the world. Most Ironman events have a strict time limit of 17 hours to complete the race. The race typically starts in the early morning with a mandatory time cut off for the 2.4-mile swim of 2 hours 20 minutes, the mandatory bike cut off time is 8 hours 10 minutes and the mandatory marathon cut off is midnight. Any participant who manages to complete the triathlon within these timings becomes an Ironman.
