Legal Aid Funding Available to Prisoners
In December 2013, the government restricted the numbers of scenarios available for a prisoner to receive legal representation under the legal aid scheme. This has greatly reduced a number of matters from scope that were previously covered under legal aid.
Legal aid funding is still available for the following:
- All paper reviews considered by the Parole Board (lifers, IPP and recall), where the prisoner is eligible for release, i.e. on tariff and post-tariff reviews.
- All oral hearings before the Parole Board, where the prisoner is eligible for release. Our prison law team can represent you during such hearing.
- If you believe your Sentence Calculation has been incorrectly estimated.
- Adjudications before an outside adjudicator: If a prisoner is due to appear before an outside adjudicator where additional days may be imposed then we can attend and represent the prisoner during the hearing.
If you or someone you know is facing any of these issues, contact our general enquiries line on 0161 8341515.
Privately Funded Representation
Whilst funding has been removed for a large number of matters we are still able to deal with typical prison law issues on a privately funded basis. At Olliers, we completely appreciate that your funds may be limited but that you still may need advice on a legal matter you are facing. We aim to make your decision to seek representation as easy as possible and do offer low, fixed fee rates for many of the above cases.
We can assist with all of the following on a privately funded basis:
- Parole Board Hearings
- General Sentence Progression Issues
- Enforcing Prisoner’s Rights

All fees must be paid on account of costs prior to any work being undertaken. This is a condition that we have to insist upon in each case.
If there were any additional costs or disbursements which are needed to met to prepare your case (eg medical records, data subject access fees, reports) these would be payable in addition.
If you wanted a visit in person to discuss your case (or an additional visit for oral hearing cases) there would be an additional charge of £50.+ vat for a video-link visit (if facilities are available) and £100 + vat + the costs of travel if you wanted a face-to-face visit at the prison.
If, after we have carried out work for you, there is additional work that you would like us to do on your behalf, we would advise you of the cost of this and request a further payment on account from you.
In the event a hearing is part-heard, adjourned or deferred we would provide you with details of any additional costs to represent you at that hearing.
We can provide a quotation for other types of work not listed above on request.
